Propulsion / Linear Motor Engineer

Zürich, Zurich
Work Type: Full Time

A track-side linear motor is embedded in the infrastructure to ensure global system efficiency and allow for high pod acceleration without substantially increasing the pod’s mass as the motor and power equipment such as coils and energy source are moved to the track. A designated first generation linear motor is thus to be implemented in the launch zone of the 3km tube.  The main challenges of the unprecedented nature and speeds of such a linear motor are tackled together with our industry partners, suppliers and research institutions and involve, in particular, the high-speed control of the power electronics architecture and the motor-pod interaction such as dynamics analysis and communication. With a passion to closely collaborate with leading experts in this field, the Linear Motor Engineer is in a position to develop key engineering components that are crucial for our infrastructure.

  • Design of modular linear motor prototypes

  • Optimisation of the motor for energy efficiency & operational costs

  • Dedicated research and prototyping of high-speed motor control

  • Integration with power architecture, elaborated cooling concept and integration in the tube

  • Materials and industrial processing evaluations with industry and research partners

  • Final design and definition of motor-pod interfaces as feedback/communication design

  • Basic:

    • BSc. or higher degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent

    • Experience in designing high-performance electrical products throughout the product life cycle

    • Deep familiarity with electrical motors (Asynchronous, Synchronous, Reluctance and Hybrid types) and industrial automation, incl. their manufacturing

    • Knowledge in electromagnetic simulation and design optimization for electric motors

    • Practical experience in test benching and applied motor controls is beneficial

    • Team player and entrepreneurial curiosity to work in a highly dynamic environment

    • Multiple years of experience in analytical modelling and multi-physics numerical simulation of electric machine

    • Multiple years of experience with CAD, preferably in Siemens NX

    • Multiple years of experience with electronic components, mechanical and electrical test equipment (e.g. gauges, multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies)

    • Ability to work on inter-dependent projects concurrently and drive interdisciplinary teams in concurrent design & engineering (V&V process)

    • High level of self-motivation and strong multi-tasking, organizational, communication and documentation skills

    • Ability to prioritize and perform time management

    • Strong sense of accountability and integrity with excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Creative problem solver that can bring multiple disciplines together with the ability to assess risk and make design and development decisions without all available data

    • Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere

    • Previous experience working with team of researchers and hardware development, planning & plant engineers and electricians

  • Preferred Skills & Experience:

    • High voltage safety training

    • Professional experience with physical sensors, specifically pressure, acceleration, strain, and temperature

    • Experience with Matlab, LabVIEW, Python, SPICE, SQL, and/or National Instruments hardware

    • Ability to read and understand power and control schematics

    • Ability to read and understand highly technical equipment operation and maintenance (O&M) manuals

    • Track record of working in project teams known for rapid prototyping development (e.g. Hyperloop Pod Competition, Formula SAE, Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

  • Additional Requirements:

    • Some travel in Central Europe may be required.

    • English and French and/or German language and communication proficiency.
